Why are you breaking my heart?

” Now when we heard these things, both we and those from that place pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, “What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” So when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, “The will of the Lord be done.””

Acts 21:11-14 NKJV

For the past several months, I’ve had a chance to stay with my Aunt a few days a week while I’ve been in town for work. One thing I appreciate the most about her is how she does not give unsolicited advice or opinions unless asked directly. Rather, she listens, offers advice if asked, and offers to pray. I thought about her today when I read this passage. Paul had a clear word to go to Jerusalem, but people begged him not to go, knowing that he would face adversity. But Paul was committed to his calling and his friends relented.

I wonder how often we discourage other people from following the will of G-d for their lives simply because we feel uncomfortable or afraid. How many times have I pleaded with someone not to do something because I didn’t think it was a good idea or I was afraid for them? More than once I’m certain. And, I’ve been the one who others pleaded with to not do a certain thing. Both are interesting positions to be in.

No one can hear G-d for me – it’s up to me to hear and obey His voice. Likewise, it’s up to you to hear and obey G-d’s voice for your life. And, the best thing we can do is to encourage and pray for one another to follow the path G-d lays out for them and keep our fears, our doubts, and our discouragement to ourselves. Sure, there’s a place to give advice or counsel when asked – but, when it’s unsolicited, it’s best to remain silent and submit our concerns to the Lord. He alone has the power to intervene, to protect, and to guide. The last thing I want to is to be the person that breaks another’s heart because of my own fear and worry. I want to be the one that infuses hearts with hope and courage. I want to be a champion that inspires people to run hard after what G-d has put in their hearts. Sure, there will be difficulty and there may be pain, but there will also be an amazing story to tell. May we be champions of one another, spurring one another on to good deeds today.

Father – Thank You for how You lead and champion me. Help me to be a champion of Your people. You are good and You keep doing good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
