““Yet you say, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right!’ Listen to me, O people of Israel. Am I the one not doing what’s right, or is it you?”
Ezekiel 18:25 NLT
By definition, a judgement is an opinion based on feeling, thoughts, or evidence. Judgement is both something we fear and something we embrace. We make judgments of others at the drop of a hat, yet we are often paralyzed when others heap judgement on us. It’s quite the dichotomy.
For as much as I hate being judged for my actions, how often do I pass judgment on the Lord? Or pass judgment on others? Far too often I say.
While there is wisdom in applying judgement to situations and decisions in our lives to determine what’s G-d’s will and what is wrong or right, good or evil, and wise or foolishness, I fear that I often use judgement as an excuse or a weapon instead of what it’s intended for. While believers should judge – it’s a weapon to be used as precisely, as expertly, and as carefully as a surgeon uses a scalpel. And, turning the weapon on G-d is as foolish as giving a scalpel to a toddler – you just don’t.
When my flesh prickles and I’m tempted to judge G-d with statements like, “it’s not fair!” and “what You are doing is not right, Lord!”, may I be ever mindful that EVERYTHING He does is GOOD and that He alone is the plumb line to measure things against.
Father – thank You for Your Word. Forgive me for wielding judgement carelessly and incorrectly – especially against You. You alone are good and You keep doing good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
