The Gain of Contentment

“But godliness actually is a source of great gain when accompanied by contentment [that contentment which comes from a sense of inner confidence based on the sufficiency of God]. For we have brought nothing into the world, so [it is clear that] we cannot take anything out of it, either. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.”

1 Timothy 6:6-8 AMP

It’s interesting that this passage falls during this season ripe with Christmas lists, gifts, and often debt. For years I have hated the consumerism of this season. It’s not that I mind giving a gift to someone but it feels so forced and obligatory at times. Combined with the conviction I’m feeling to eliminate most of our clutter and adopt a more minimalist type lifestyle, the idea of learning to be content with much less is oddly attractive to me.

The word content in the Greek is autárkeia: a mind satisfied with it’s lot. That’s a powerful statement to me that indicates intentionality and choice. For a mind to be satisfied with it’s lot, there can be no comparison or regret, no looking back or looking beside. It’s resting in the place I find myself in, an inner knowing that His plan is perfect, that He is good, and I can trust Him. Could contentment be a sign of deep faith and trust? I dare say it is.

May my inner confidence in Him outweigh the restlessness within. May I cast off this restlessness within and experience deep satisfaction in Him alone. May comparisons and consumerisms be drowned out by a mind at rest in Him.

More of Him. Less of me. Always.

Father – help me to rest in the place You have me. Give me eyes to see Your provision and wisdom to know what to release. You are good and You keep doing good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
