Ruth

“So she fell on her face, bowed down to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?” And Boaz answered and said to her, “It has been fully reported to me, all that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and have come to a people whom you did not know before. The Lord repay your work, and a full reward be given you by the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.””

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭2:10-12‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Ruth is one of my favorite people and stories in the Bible. She worshipped the G-d of the Israelites. She was a sacrificial servant – leaving her home and family to follow her mother in law. She was a hard worker who walked in honor to those in authority over her. She did everything that was asked of her and more. She was a person of integrity – her words and actions were in alignment. Ruth was loyal – loyal to Naomi, loyal to Boaz, and loyal to G-d. I “get” Ruth.

To be honest, I was almost sad the daily reading included the entire book in just a day because there’s so much to learn from her life!! But as I was meditating on the story of Ruth, what struck me was her first interaction with Boaz and his almost prophetic response.

Boaz’s words and actions towards Ruth indicate that she was fully accepted even though she “didn’t belong” by birth. Boaz heard about Ruth’s actions and the loyalty she showed to her mother in law and to the G-d of Israel. He witnessed her loyalty and integrity for himself during the barley harvest which would have lasted approximately 3 months in Biblical times. And even though she was not a Israelite, Boaz recognized that G-d – the One True G-d – would reward her.

Ruth – a foreigner – found favor with G-d, was fully accepted, and deeply loved.

If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t belong somewhere like I know I have, we can find encouragement, courage, and hope in the story of Ruth – especially that her reward came from G-d. When we are loyal to Him, He blesses us with His protection and favor. He alone is our Redeemer and under His wings we can find comfort, acceptance, and rest.

Father – thank You for how You love me and how You encourage me with Your word. You are a good Father and great provider. Thank You for making a way for me. You are good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
