Name Knower

But let one who boasts boast in this: that he understands and knows Me. For I am Adonai who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth. For in these things I delight.” It is a declaration of Adonai.”

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭9:23‬ ‭TLV‬‬

I can’t stand “name droppers” – especially in the pulpit. We attended church once where all the pastor seemed to do was relive his glory days when he met this famous person and worked with that famous person. He shook this persons hand and prayed with that one. He was more stuck on the “who” he’d encountered than the “Who” we needed. It was maddening.

There’s only One name to “drop” and it’s not a famous pastor or Christian artist – it’s Adonai. That’s it. The only One worth mentioning.

The word boast is “hālal” – to rave and proclaim foolishly. We should be raving and proclaiming foolishly that we sâkal – are prudent, attentive to, and wise – like a teacher who would teach a subject, and we yāḏaʿ – we know by personal experience – Adonai. The Hebrew word in this passage for know – yāḏaʿ – denotes more than a casual acquaintance. It indicates intimacy – a knowing that comes from personal experience or divine revelation. We don’t just have a cerebral understanding – we have a heart revelation.

I heard my mentor say once that G-d wasn’t looking for casual acquaintances – He is seeking intimates, those who’s hearts are fully His. Those who trust in His goodness even in hard times and don’t turn away in offense. Those who cast off distractions and press in closer to touch the hem of His garment. He’s looking for a name knower, not a name dropper.

May we press beyond the fray. May we sit at His feet. May we lean in and listen. May our hearts be fully His. And may it be said of us that we brought Him great delight.

Father- thank You for Your Word and Your truth. You are faithful to speak every day and to reveal more of Yourself. You are good and You keep doing good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
