“Give me wisdom and knowledge, so that I may go out and come in [performing my duties] before this people, for [otherwise] who can rule and administer justice to this great people of Yours?””
2 Chronicles 1:10 AMP
Leadership, like parenting, is not for the faint of heart, and while all of us may not be parents, all of us lead someone – a person we influence, be it a friend, family member, or a colleague.
I’ve read many great books on leadership but none compare to the Bible. When Solomon began his reign, he could have asked for anything, yet he chose wisdom – ḥāḵmâ – skillful wisdom (in administration) and knowledge – madāʿ – intelligence or consciousness:—knowledge, science, thought.
I’ve often wondered why Solomon chose to ask for those two things specifically. Did Solomon remember the charge his father gave him in I Chronicles 28? Did Solomon feel overwhelmed and incapable to accomplish everything David laid out?
I don’t know Solomon’s heart – but I like to imagine he remembered his fathers words and asked accordingly:
““As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.”
I Chronicles 28:9 NKJV
Solomon appeared to have a reverence for and understanding of the seriousness that came with ruling the people – G-d’s people. Likewise, as a leader, I am dealing with a soul created by G-d – a unique individual, made in His image, fashioned by His hands. Therefore, I have to handle those I lead with care. I have to honor individual differences.
We can read books and attend seminars – but true wisdom and knowledge to lead come only from G-d. I look to Him to guide my words, my actions, and my thoughts as a leader. I trust Him to give me – as He did Solomon- keen insight and understanding to see beyond the surface issues into the heart of the matter. He is my source and my super power as a leader. With His help, with His hand guiding me, I can love and lead like Him.
Father – thank You for Your Word and how you teach me day by day. Guide my words and actions today. Consume my thoughts. You are good and You keep doing good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
