“But now bring me a musician.” Then it happened, when the musician played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him. And he said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Make this valley full of ditches.’ For thus says the Lord: ‘You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you, your cattle, and your animals may drink.’”
II Kings 3:15-17 NKJV
Won’t He do it?! In the midst of a valley, He shows his power – and His kindness – by providing the most basic necessity of life: water. The Kings of Israel, Edom, and Judah were marching into war with their armies and their animals. For seven long days there was no water. For anyone.
Dry. Tired. Weary. Desperate. They made a decision to seek G-d through His prophet Elisha.
His answer, through the prophet, “Dig ditches.”
Take a step of faith. One that is costly. One you don’t have the strength for. But DIG.
They obeyed. He filled them. No rain. No wind. Just water.
He spoke. They obeyed. Then they waited. And after they made their grain offering the next morning – an offering of thanks – He provided. He filled the ditches with water.
And, interesting enough, He used those very ditches full of water – that He provided – to deliver the Moabites into their hands.
He is strong in my weaknesses. Sometimes what He asks of me seems – no feels – impossible. Obedience aligns me with Him and with Him, all things are possible.
Whatever season we find ourselves in- desperate for water, low in the valley, digging the trench, or waiting for water to come- may we be encouraged by today’s reading and have confidence in the promise that He will come fill the ditch again.
Father – thank You for Your mercy and kindness to me. Thank You that in all seasons You provide. Thank You that You speak to me. Thank You that give me grace and strength to obey Your voice. You are good and You keep doing good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
