Daddy’s Girl

“Then she [rode up to Caleb and] dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” Achsah answered, “Give me a blessing; since you have given me the [dry] land of the Negev (South country), give me springs of water, too.” So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.”

‭‭Joshua‬ ‭15:18-19‬ ‭AMP‬‬

In biblical times, women didn’t have many rights. Achsah, daughter of Caleb, was given in an arranged marriage. And while her father gave her an inheritance, she asked for more and her boldness was rewarded with not only one spring, but two.

This verse really stood out to me today – specifically the courage she had to ask and the heart of Caleb to respond so generously. It was definitely out of character for the time and culture in which they lived.

The Lord began to remind me of my relationship with my own father. I am no doubt a daddy’s girl. My dad is good and kind to me, and far more generous than I deserve. He gives wise counsel and is strong in faith. I know my dad. He’s proven himself time and time again as a man who can be trusted – and not just by me.

I imagine Achsah had a special relationship with her dad. I dare say she was a daddy’s girl too. And, I believe that relationship is what gave her the courage to have such a bold ask. I think she knew he would not deny her before she dismounted the donkey to approach him.

As good as my dad is as a father, there is One who is greater. And as I was reading today, picturing Achsah approaching her dad, G-d whispered to my heart: “don’t be afraid to ask for more.”

When Achsah asked for an additional inheritance, her father responded immediately and gave her what was already in his heart to give.

It’s easy for me to see G-d as a good father because I’ve had a good earthly example. Sadly, I know not everyone is that fortunate. May G-d heal those broken places.

I’m encouraged and reminded today that G-d isn’t afraid of bold prayers or big asks and that big asks and bold prayers stem from relationship. Achsah asked boldly for an inheritance because she knew and trusted the heart of her father. Likewise, the more I come to know Him as my Father, the more time I spend with Him, and the more I learn of His character, the more boldly I pray and intercede. Because I know He is good and that He can be trusted, I can be confident and unafraid to approach Him. And when I ask, though He may not answer when I want Him to, He will answer in His time and give me what is in His heart because my Father knows best.

He wants what good earthly fathers want – for me to come to Him, fully trusting and fully confident in His goodness. I approach Him and ask because He is good. His leadership in my life is perfect and He alone can be trusted.

Father – thank you for my dad. Thank You for teaching and guiding me. You never give up because You are just that good. Continue to teach me about You. Amen.
