““The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
Deuteronomy 29:29 NKJV
We raised our kids with the idea that secrets should not be kept. Yet here we learn that secret things belong to G-d. I’ve been pondering what secrets those might be – but then I remember that His ways are beyond my understanding.
I’m reminded of something Pastor Olen used to say about G-d’s word. We can read the same thing over and over again and each time we can see and learn something different. Those, I think, are the secrets that belong to Him, the truths in His word hidden to me last week yet revealed to me today.
Today is my best friends birthday. She knows secrets about me that she’ll take to the grave – hidden fears and things I’ve revealed to her because of the friendship and trust we’ve intentionally cultivated over time through talking, listening, laughing, crying, and just spending time together. The more time we spent together, the more I began to trust her, and the more I revealed. Secrets are shared with those we are close to – not to our acquaintances.
I think it’s like that with G-d. The more we spend time with Him, the more we listen to and converse with Him, the more we cultivate our relationship with Him, and intentionally pursue Him, the more He reveals Himself to us. And that which is revealed to us now belongs to us and our children.
One of my favorite movies says it this way:
“My father told me it takes the glory of G-d to conceal a matter. And it takes the honor of Kings to search it out.” Hadassah – One Night With The King (based on Proverbs 25:2)
The Word says that His eyes roam throughout the whole earth to see who’s hearts are fully His so that He might strengthen hearts fully committed to and loyal to Him (2 Chronicles 16:9). I believe G-d desires to reveal Himself to us in order to strengthen and sustain us. The question I must ask myself is this: does He find me trustworthy and able to carry, guard, and shepherd the secrets He longs to reveal to me? When His eyes find me, may I be found as one loyal to Him.
Father – thank You for speaking to me through Your Word and thank You for Randi. She’s taught me much about You and I am grateful for her! Bless her today. Father, make my heart loyal to You. Root out that which is not pleasing to You. Draw me close to You so that I may know the secrets of Your heart for me and my family. You are good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
