““So Bezalel and Oholiab are to work, along with every wise-hearted man in whom Adonai has placed insight and understanding to know how to perform all the labor for the service of the Sanctuary, according to everything Adonai has commanded.” Then Moses called Bezalel, Oholiab and all the wise-hearted men in whose minds Adonai had set wisdom, along with everyone whose heart stirred him up to come do the work.”
Exodus 36:1-2 TLV
G-d is the giver of talents and abilities. He puts wisdom, ideas, and creativity in our hearts. As a mom and leader, part of my responsibility is to be attentive, listen for the things stirring in my son and daughters heart, and help shepard and cultivate those gifts. It’s also my responsibility to look within at what He has put in my heart and what He he is stirring in me.
In this verse, the Hebrew word for the phrase “stirred him up” is nâsâʼ and in this passage carries the meaning of “of heart lifting one up”.
It’s pretty accurate imagery -your heart lifting you up. I know the feeling of my heart being stirred up. I clearly remember the day G-d called me to serve my mentor, Pastor Olen. I was listening to him preach at a worship seminar and sitting there, my heart felt this tug, this restlessness, like it was being pulled out of my chest. I knew I was called to serve him, and G-d placed the ability in me to do so for 12 years. I’ve felt other stirrings – a stirring to take an exit I never take, seeing a homeless man with a sign, and stirring to obey the voice that said to send the prodigal home. Throughout my walk with G-d, I’ve felt stirrings to serve, stirrings to go, stirrings to write.
For years I was labeled as “too emotional” – I wonder how how much of that was a stirring that I just didn’t understand or recognize.
When our heart is all stirred up, it’s something to pay attention to. We may not be called to build Moses’ Tabernacle but He could be calling us to build something else for His glory, and when our hearts are lifted to Him, there’s a sense of fulfillment and joy that cannot be described.
Father, help me to identify the stirrings when they come – to see what You’ve put in my heart. Give me ears to hear Your voice and eyes to see Your hand. I want to build Your kingdom. Stir me up for what stirs You. You are good. You can be trusted and Your leadership in my life is perfect. Amen.
