“Adonai is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in Him.” Adonai is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul that seeks Him. It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of Adonai.”
Lamentations 3:24-26 TLV
In Numbers, when Adonai divided the land and assigned areas to the tribes as their inheritance, He did not assign any to the Levites – His special servants who attended the Altar. Rather than inherit any physical land, they were told that He, Adonai, was their “ḥēleq” – the possession of his servants, priests, as enjoying perquisites of altar.
What they were given was intangible yet invaluable. Nothing could – or would ever – compare to His presence. He alone was their portion – their destiny and their lot. The Levites – the worshippers – had only Him as their portion, and it was everything they needed.
We’ve been asking ourselves about our “lot lines” recently. One of the consequences of so many moves in 23 years is lack of relationships and when you return to a place you left years before, you realize the relationships you once had have changed to the point there unrecognizable or they no longer exist at all. As a result, we’ve mourned the loss over and over.
But in today’s passage I’m reminded that He is the only portion that really matters. In the end, when I face eternity, the only relationship that matters is my one with Him – nothing more, nothing less.
In ancient times, a dowry, or “portion”, was given to a bride at her marriage. As a bride of Christ, He is the dowry that was given to me when I accepted His free gift of salvation. When I find myself unhappy or dissatisfied, I just need to take a step back, refocus, and really gaze at the portion I’ve been given. Yeshua. He alone is my portion and that is more than enough.
Father – thank You for Your Word and Your presence. Your kindness is overwhelming and Your grace undeserving. You are good and You keep doing good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
