Vinedressers

“But the captain of the guard left some of the poorest of the land to be vinedressers and field hands.”

‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭25:12‬ ‭TLV‬‬

Jerusalem decimated and destroyed. People were exiled. Some were taken captive. Others  ran. And some of were left to be vinedressers and field hands. Here’s the hope: we may be overlooked, rejected, broken, poor, and forgotten, but – the Captain of the Guard – our Savior – has a plan and purpose for us, even when all is lost.

This week I experienced unmerited favored after years of faithful leadership. I was given a promotion on paper I do not deserve but G-d saw fit to favor me in the eyes of man. Sure, I have a new title, but at heart, I’m still a vinedresser. A vinedresser is a person who prunes, trains, and cultivates vines.

As a follower of Yeshua, each of us are called to prune, to train, and to cultivate the vines within our influence. The work is messy and often misunderstood. But in the end, the result is more beautiful than we can imagine. The fruit gives joy, life, and provision. No matter where we find ourselves, may we be reminded that the life of a vinedresser requires patience and fortitude. He sees us. He hasn’t forgotten us. And though all seems lost at times, we still have work to do.

Father – thank You for Your Word and Your presence. Thank You that You see me and have a plan and a place for me. You are good and You keep doing good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
