“So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture, Will give You thanks forever; We will show forth Your praise to all generations.”
Psalms 79:13 NKJV
The wordsmith in me loves this verse.
I used to love scrapbooking. I really should pick it up again. I loved everything about the process – printing the pictures, cutting them, creating a page layout, and finally filling the pages with words. I had this whole process. I would arrive to the retreat on Thursday and crop pictures. On Friday I would lay out all the pages and tape down the pictures and on Saturday I would write and write and write until I couldn’t hold my pen. It was my favorite part. I am, as Danielle says in Ever After, “addicted to the written word.”
In reading today’s passage, I’m immediately reminded of those days. He commands us to “show forth” His deeds to the generations who will follow us.
The Hebrew in this verse is beautiful. His “tᵊhillâ” – the qualities, deeds, and attributes of Yahweh are demanding the praise – like quality of adoration and thanksgiving paid to G-d alone. And all those amazing deeds and His great qualities should be sāp̄ar- rehearsed – to score with a mark as a tally or record, to recount and celebrate; to tell as a writer.
The TLV says it this way:
“From generation to generation we will recount Your praise.”
Psalms 79:13 TLV
And the Amplified this way:
“We will declare and publish Your praise from generation to generation.”
Psalms 79:13 AMP
We can’t just SAY it! The deeds of G-d NEED to be written!! It’s His way!
The words I write as a gift to Him will, I pray, become a legacy for my children and grandchildren one day. I will keep writing. I will keep penning. And maybe, just maybe, it’s time to dust off my supplies. Anyone have a space coming up?
Father – thank You for Your Word and for the gift of words. You are good and You keep doing good. Your leadership in my life is perfect and You can be trusted. Amen.
